Death by Wheelie bin fire:

A 3 year old boy was killed in this fire: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/northamptonshire/7302636.stm

In Merseyside, bin arson rose by 23 per cent between 2006 and 2008.
A report from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Authority earlier this year warned wheelie bin fires caused £7.3million in damage over the two years.
In Manchester, fire chiefs estimate 3,000 wheelie bins are stolen from homes in Salford alone – and half are used in arson attacks. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue says four people have been killed in wheelie bin fires in the last four years.
Last year the service’s arson intervention officer said: ‘They are easy to set light to and people don’t think they cause much damage. But the potential for danger is there because flames from a wheelie bin can quickly reach 20ft high and endanger property while people are asleep.’
Mr Jackson said: ‘These worrying cases of bin arson across the country are putting lives at risk, devastating families and leaving a massive bill for taxpayers.
‘Yet Government agencies are in disarray. Health and safety bureaucrats instruct councils to switch to wheelie bins, but our firefighters are warning that wheelie bins are now a major cause of fires and are telling residents to keep their bins away from their house.’
He added: ‘We need a proper Government review of threat to public safety from wheelie bins and a moratorium on further rollout until that inquiry reports.’

So, another cynical, sceptical negative Tobes prediction... proven entirely correct...  :(

Witnessed many a burned out car - even helped move one and cut it up - shall we get rid of those?

Of course, it never happened did it...?  :-X

Quote
ARSONISTS in Swindon caused a trail of destruction on the first few days of the Easter holidays, with more than ten separate attacks.

Firefighters were left dumbfounded after they were called out to five fires started deliberately on Easter Monday, three on Tuesday and three on Wednesday.

The first incident happened shortly after 1am on Easter Monday when a motorbike was set alight in Walcot, followed by a rubbish bin fire in Graham Street at 2.50am and a wheelie bin fire in Crombey Street at 7.45am.

I was out walking this afternoon aroung the old canal at Shrivenham and was chatting to a Community Safety Officer.
They have also had a spate of fires but not in the village, only on the outskirts.

Maybe the bin fires were due to someone getting rid of documentary or other types of evidence?

Don't know why they are surprised, it's just a bit late this year. Usually the first bit of fine weather has this effect.

I wonder what our Representatives who sit on the Police Authority have to say about this spate of vandalism?

I am of course referring to Council Leader Rod Bluh, and Councillor Brian Ford Vice Chairman.  Oops I am out of date the website indicates that Councillor Ray Fisher is also now one of their number!

I wonder if their leader Cameron will dispense with this unproductive quango?  After all they earn good money from it.

It is worthy of note that access to members allowances has been removed from the site.  I guess Rod's influence on Secrecy has even reached here.

I was once told that Swindon, being a unitary authority, could have its own Police Force.  Now that I would support along with an elected Chief Constable.

Anyone know how much they get paid for being on the Police and Fire committees and how they got to be on them.

It is definitely on the Wiltshire Police Authority Web Site
Once you have accessed this go into Members then from there to allowances.
But unless you don't want to be upset don't bother.
The amounts are staggering. Bluh gets £8K, for just being a member, which is separate from his council thousands.
Cllr B Ford gets just short of £20K as vice chairman, and for an authority of just 19 members they have 2 vice chairman.
The total bill would put another 20 at least Bobbies on the beat.
Is this the solution to your Wheelie Bin fires?
