Internet-savvy libertarians might want to watch this
« on: February 05, 2010, 09:38:59 PM »
It's a short film by Mark Thomas regarding some upcoming legislation which, at face value, is targeted at people who repeatedly download illicitly published copyrighted content (films, mp3s, that sort of thing). It apparently provides the sanction of cutting the offender off from the internet, and based on accusation rather than proof or conviction.

As the film points out, this isn't very well targeted, because you can't cut a single person off from the internet, you need to cut off the entire household (and the person in question could always get onto the www from somewhere else in any case).

There's another worrying point made, regarding "clause 17", which apparently allows a gov't minister to amend copyright law without needing to put any legislation before parliament.

This is the first I've heard of this, has anyone else heard of it?

So what you do is, download software from the Internet that cracks the encryption on your neighbours wireless router and illegally download away on their account. Better still if your neighbour has a BT home hub, next time you are round for a cup of tea have a gander underneath his BT router and make a note of the encryption key conveniently printed on the label while he is making a brew.

Got to be unenforceable i would have thought...

I'm not PC (and Windows 7 was not my idea)

Yep, a rellie of Tigs, (who's notoriously 'careful' with his money),  has been piggy-backing off his neighbours wifi for years.  He was overjoyed when he recently discovered Skype was free, (voice over internet), so he's been skyping people all over the world  ;D

He must be really kicking the crap out of his neighbours bandwidth   :-\
