Title: A Billion.........
Post by: Chav on November 06, 2010, 08:00:08 PM
Someone sent me the following in an email which made me think !!
Quote
THIS IS TOO TRUE TO BE FUNNY.

The  next time you hear a politician use the
Word 'Billion' in a casual  manner, think about
Whether you want the 'politicians'  spending
YOUR tax money.

A Billion is a difficult number to  comprehend,
But one advertising agency did a good job of
Putting  that figure into some perspective in
One of it's  releases.

A.
A  Billion seconds ago it was 1959.

B.
A  Billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

C.
A  Billion hours ago our ancestors were
Living in the Stone  Age.

D.
A  Billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

E.
A  Billion Pounds ago was only
13 hours and 12 minutes,
At  the rate our government
Is spending it.

Stamp Duty
Tobacco Tax
Corporate  Income Tax
Income Tax

Council Tax
Unemployment Tax
Fishing License  Tax
Petrol/Diesel  Tax
Inheritance Tax
(tax on top of tax)
Alcohol Tax
V.A.T.
Marriage  License Tax
Property Tax
Service charge tax's
Social Security Tax
Vehicle License RegistrationTax
Vehicle Sales  Tax
Workers Compensation Tax

STILL  THINK THIS IS FUNNY?

Not  one of these taxes existed 100 years ago...
And our nation was one of the most  prosperous in the world.

We had absolutely no national  debt...
We had the largest middle class in the world...
And  Mum stayed home to raise the kids.

What  happened?
Can you spell 'politicians!'

I  hope this goes around the world
At least  100 times What  the hell happened?????

100 years ago the average life expectancy was 47............

School leaving age and thus when you would need to start work was 12

51% literacy rate, £1.40 average wage a week

Cohlera, influenza, numerous deficiencies and no NHS

Anyone out there want to go back to the 'good old days'

and arguably we didn't need all these taxes because Britain was subsidising itself with revenue raised from the Empire... that's why so many countries wanted their independence!

A billion, let me think about that one, it is claimed the US  forces consume some 1.8 billion bullets a year!  Borough of Swindon

1900 to 1910 saw a billion spent on the Royal Navy as it built its Dreadnought programme and that was when a Billion was a lot of money.

I would recommend "Cider with Rosie" by Laurie Lee ( An account of his childhood at the beginning of the 1900s) to put this into perspective. Makes you realise why they had big families back in the day. An entertaining read with some very sobering moments.

Largest middle class? Is that something of which to be proud? In a world with no other culture that could achieve a middle class?

Large families were due to the gene survival  instinct. So many children died in their infancy. My grandmother had 13, about 6 made it to old age. Our whole extended family is probably smaller than that now.
