Title: Re: Has The First Chapter Of Neq WIFI 2 Deal Been Written?
Post by: Terry Reynolds on March 06, 2015, 10:18:13 AM
I am having a email session with the council leader about wifi, he says there is nothing wrong and to say there is, is a slur on the council, he also denies that there are now two suppliers providing broadband to the town, does anybody have any back posts where it was said that uk broadband would provide broadband for the town and not just the civic offices??.
regards terry,
and if in doubt it is now 'case closed' on such subjects for the council..

Quick search of the Adver website: (Must be right as it quotes Roderick Bluh.... remember that bastion of transparancy and openness?  :coffee:)

The introduction of both new networks marks investments made by UK Broadband (UKB) entirely at its own cost.

Council leader Roderick Bluh said: “It will open up so many different opportunities for us as a council and for households and businesses.”

It is estimated that the network will allow more than 67,000 households and 2,600 businesses in Swindon to access superfast broadband via a 4G box that can be plugged into any power socket.

The first of two phases of the new project offers a range of wireless broadband services to residents and businesses as a flexible alternative to fixed line broadband. Phase two will offer mobile services and this is expected to happen next Spring.

And a couple more:

This hybrid network will provide a complete wireless city solution for both the public sector and businesses. Local residents will also be able to take advantage of new 4G services through retail partnerships.

The Now Wireless Broad-band monthly packages vary from £21.50 to £40 for householders and £20.83 to £52.50 for businesses but UK broadband has refused to say how many have signed-up because it says the public network is not fully built.

I wonder what the IT experts on the council, spending our money on their wifi dreams, think of the news that BT is to go ahead with 4g broadband in the town at a pretty cheap rate......

Not really the same products.

BT are re-entering the mobile market. They are waiting regulatory approval for their takeover of EE. They are in the short term using the EE network.

EE also happens to be the company that's trialling 4.5G in London which really does deliver superfast wireless broadband.

Readers will now of course be delighted with the news that Royal Wootton Bassett have now got 98% coverage of 4G superfast broadband, it is supplied by fibre links from Vodaphone, didn't cost the 4 million the council have paid out and the town is not covered by 29 masts, some street cred there for bassett.. as for our lot, the mind boggles..

No big deal really, the Bassett system will be via the mobile phone network.  Swindon is already 100% 4G covered by the various mobile networks.

I've got EE 4G and normally get 20+mbps (60mbps is apparently the top speed), that's better than some people get down a wire.  If we get 4G+ from EE we'll get up to 150mbps.

Oh and superfast is considered to be 24mbps and above by the government so if my experience is anything to go by Swindon already has superfast 4G - that's why SBC's plans are so stupid.

the word was out yesterday that Vodafone have confirmed that Swindon will be covered by its 4 or 5G superfast broadband network by December this year and it will be at least 98% of the whole town, so as per the last post that makes the 4 million the council have given away even more daft, the word child care and adult care come to mind....

Have you got a source for this? I am skeptical as 5G hasn't even been standardised yet - it's still being researched.

I'm guessing it's 4.5G or 4G+ or whatever it's called.

Correct the 'Great Perkinator' for and behalf of Swindon Borough Council is in competition with them and after their experience with Digital City they are now well placed to undertake this seriously!  :D

Is Rikki Hunt due to make a dramatic comeback with a multi national company to undertake the task?

I believe GP made it perfectly clear in Council that BT did not want to know about his attempt to supply Borough wide Broadband and didn't engage with any approaches from him.

I wonder why?

Meanwhile BT are quietly getting on with it.

I believe Garry Perkins has been kicked of the project and Mary Martin has been given the reigns.

I see Rikki has indeed made a dramatic headline with an advert in the Adver today "Could Loyal Staff Stop you Growing?"

He is still  a management guru.  Looks like we are safe for now, unless BT take advantage of his offer- they always liked a management guru or two....

My 4G is very efficient in Swindon, everywhere..

A very interesting development of which I should have known had I maintained my attendance in the Civic, but I lost the will to live over it!

Still with Mary M in charge it stands a better chance, but I still have absolutely no idea what, she her husband our erstwhile favourite Mayor and the Man who gave away Leisure are actually doing in Shaw, it is a mess, but.............. I've had enough of fighting them it is a lose lose situation and I have more important things to do these days!!
