adver court circular
« on: February 10, 2014, 11:13:55 AM »
In the adver's court details today there are two mentions of men who were caught stealing at the outlet village, one had a foil bag loaded with around £400 worth of items, the tin foil I presume to distract security beams, but the interesting point is that both men have come to the country in the last month, and yes from Romania.... :WTF:.

I've never before considered the following in depth....but I'm curious as to what percentage of UK crime is committed by U.K nationals, E.U nationals and nationals from outside the E.U.

I ask because the vast majority of non U.K people I meet and work with are as hard, (sometimes harder), working as my British colleagues and seem no less trustworthy.  I don't know this, but I'd be surprised if the ratios of law abiding to law breaking migrants and immigrants are very much different than they are for U.K nationals.

I'm also minded that it is possible that media coverage of crime involving immigrants encourages confirmation bias in those whose perception, already biased towards believing economic migrants shouldn't be here, is further pushed towards a negative opinion of all migrants.

Would this thread exist if the two men were from Wootton Bassett ?

Clearly not...  :coolsmiley:

I've read the Adver today and the following stories illustrate far more serious crimes perpetrated by people with very White Anglo Saxon sounding names...

http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/10998578.Teenager_has_gun_charges_against_him_dropped/

I've a feeling that this thread is going to be something of an ants nest in the long run though - crime stats are a notoriously imprecise way of confirming or denying people's pre-existing prejudices...

The thing is, for me at least, while it is true that our elected finest completely ballsed up economic immigration forecasts and control, (10 years back HMG expected 15,000 per year from Eastern Europe but 1,500,000 arrived), I remain extremely sceptical of claims that more crimes can be attributed to them than any other group, nationality or race already present in the UK.

I wonder the same Geoff.  Undoubtedly there are criminal elements but their activities are (I suspect) being blown out of all proportion.

Have a read of this, basically tears a massive hole in the scare stories bandied about by a certain element of the British media about Romanians and Bulgarians.

These inflammatory newspaper articles are probably along the lines of what people read in 1930's Germany.  How many supposedly intelligent people back then read those papers and believed the stories and speculation to be true - how many are doing the same sort of thing now in the UK?

13 quite definite claims made by the Daily Mail in one story - each of those claims appear to have been false, and not just false but untrue.   Goebbels would have been proud of it.

But I vos only quoting ze Mail!

There's a regular contributor here who seems to treat The Mail as a kind of bible and has been subject to some needling from me for it over the years... I wonder how he pleads...?

... but before he gets the wrong end of the stick, I have serious misgivings about unregulated immigration into this country. But if you're going to present an argument, its usually better to use facts rather than prejudice as the basis for your case...
