Calne Bike Meet 2013 Could Swindon Handle It
« on: July 31, 2013, 11:12:30 PM »
Well The Calne Bike Meet came and went without incident.

Thousands of people, from miles around, gathered in the town to look at motorcycles that were ridden in by Joe (and Joanne) Public

Every pub, café, bar, restaurant was full.
Shops were busy etc

Thing is......

Could Swindon handle something like this?

Doesn't cost anything like the Radio One "Big Weekend"

Far more successful than the free wifi

Payback to the local economy was instant (and obvious)

Imagine Morley Street Car Park closed off to everything except motorbikes, stalls and bands at Wharf Green, and a concert in Faringdon Road Park.

Wouldn't be much scope for personal egos and the health and safety bods might have a relapse, but the town would be heaving for a couple of days.

If a small town like Calne can do things like this, why does Swindon fail so miserably

Think you answered your own question ICDT. Unless there is mileage for our dear Councillors then I'm afraid you have more chance of being the next Pope than it happening.

Lucky I'm not religious then

For a start SBC would have to make their minds up on wether or not Swindon can have street traders.

The latest view seems to be that only "select" traders may apply.

That certainly wasn't the case in Calne at the weekend and I reckon I know which town centre did the most trade
