  • Hello !
Today's Swindon Advertiser reports that a FOI request to reveal the names of Swindon Councillors who were summonsed or sent reminders to pay council tax has failed.

http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/10334890.Swindon_councillors_who_fail_to_pay_council_tax_remain_anonymous/http://

The paper reports that 2 councillors were summonsed in 2010/11 and 3 councillors in 2011/12, but SBC has cited the Data Protection Act as reason not to name the individuals.

Perhaps the reminders should be kept private, but surely the summons are a matter of public record.
There are only about 60 councillors, 3 summons last year is a high percentage. Why are councillor's much more likely to default than the general public?
These summons will have cost the council significant costs in terms of legal fees and staff time at a time when budgets are being cut and staff are being made redundant. Is it right that councillors can be allowed to make these decisions when they have such contempt for the system?

I find it somewhat unsettling that the words    Leona, Nineteen, Helmsley and Eightynine  keep running through my memory....anybody have an explanation for this ?

surely if they, as councillors cant pay the council tax, then they should be stripped of their councillor status..
imagine going to one of them and reporting you  had a problem with your council tax..
