This has initiated a couple of phone calls and raised a few eyebrows today, it seems that Youtube automatic captions don't respond well to either Lancastrian or Wiltshire accents.

I've copied the original [original available below] and edited the copy slightly, but I promise you that the captions are all Youtubes own work :)

Readers might recognise one or two faces in the video - I recommend watching it in 720p :)

Original video:  press 'CC' button to toggle automatic captions on/off & select 'English':

I'm off to see if there are any other pearlers in the TS Youtube vault....

What a surprise its like the old Monty Python sketch about the translation handbook. How can Youtube allow  words when I clearly did not say them? Is the software a BETA version?  :-X

Honest guv I was not endorsing Flora!

That's the best laugh I've had in a long time  :2funny:

I thought I'd see what it made of one of my recent-ish videos and it appears to have made just as much of a hash of it. Apparently it doesn't like Essex accents either. There's a different button on this one for showing the captions - rather than a CC button, it's the one which looks like a white box to the left of the cogwheel.

One thing which struck me was that it managed to interpret "once upon a time" perfectly, but when the storyteller repeated the same words, they came out as "but stockpiles aboard".

I did some research into voice recognition software a few years ago when I was wondering whether it'd be possible to produce automated transcripts of some of my videos, but soon concluded that I was onto a loser, as most such software requires a lot of "training" to  attune it to the nuances of how a particular person speaks, with lots of manual corrections of its mistakes to help it "learn".

Looks like such software is still too much in its infancy to be used in this way on the speech of millions of different people speaking in any number of different languages.
We are all in this together, but some of us are more in it than others (with apologies to George Orwell)

I have been watching various BBC question time clips on YouTube surprising what all politicians say via translation on that programme.

I spent good money on one of those voice recognition programmes. Firstly trying to train it was not much fun.  But when it came to using all the local words, well, it was so funny I considered sending the resulting minutes out as they came out of the machine.

Trouble was, there would have been several resulting 'international' incidents. So I thought better of it and I've never had the time to start again - quicker to type.
Oi! Listen mush. Old eyes, remember? I’ve been around the block a few times. More than a few. They’ve knocked down the blocks I’ve been around and rebuilt them as bigger blocks. Super blocks. And I’ve been round them as well.  The Doctor (Night Terrors)
