At some point after 10.30hrs this morning I'll be taking TS offline for between 2 and 4 hrs while I upgrade some stuff and merge the main TS and archive databases back together.

If members wish to post comments this morning please have them up by 10.30 a.m - the forum may still open after this time but the last backup (the one I'll be using to merge with the archive) will be made at 10.30 a.m, so any posts made after 10.30 a.m (assuming I'm a few minutes later taking TS offline than planned) will not be available when TS comes back online.

I'll post updates and a final 'all-clear' in this thread when it's okay to post again :)

Geoff

8 Minute Warning - TS Going Offline at 10.30 sharp!!!

Did you post this at 9:22 or 10:22?

I think we might be in the wrong time zone.
We are all in this together, but some of us are more in it than others (with apologies to George Orwell)

...and we're back online 5 minutes early :)

What's been happening Reidy?

Well, it's like this:

Some time back TS ran right up to the size limit of our database.  At the time our host was not able to increase the available size of the database so I 'split' the database into two parts and installed each in its own database.  This is where www.archive.talkswindon.org came from.  Talkswindon carried on pretty much as it had before but with the first three years worth of posts living elsewhere.

This always felt like we'd become divorced from our early history, our 'roots' if you like, and I was never really happy with a fragmented forum.  Thankfully, I've recently been able to expand the available size of our various databases to 10 times their former capacity so today I took TS offline while I merged the archived TS database, (containing threads and posts from 2006 onwards), with the database we use every day.

I think it's gone really well although I do expect a few niggles and error messages to pop up for the next few days - please feel free to start a 'snagging' topic in Forum Problems & FAQ's forum.

If you receive an error code please try to copy and paste, (or write it down), and post it in your topic.

Some users will need to reset their passwords - if you have changed your password in the last few months, and have difficulty logging in with your latest password, please try your OLD password, (if you can remember it).

If you need help re-setting your password please email me with your username & screen name and I'll give you a temporary password so you can get back into your account and change your permanent password.

I'm genuinely sorry if any members are inconvenienced but this is a worthwhile and useful, (and once in 7 years), upheaval.  I've done what I can to minimise upset  >:D

Okey Dokey, I'm pretty sure I can give you the 'All Clear' to carry on as normal :)

I'll be tinkering for the next hour or so, then a bit more fettling tomorrow, but nothing that ought to bother anyone :)

The whole shebang looks stable enough to me..... crosses fingers  ;D ;D ;D

I've just corrected a little 'niggle' with the 'list creator' function, (the thingamajig which creates those handy little alphabetised topic lists), and you may have noticed a couple of 'undefined function' errors on your screens in the last 5 minutes.

I'm happy to announce that TS is fully whole and integrated again, with every topic going back to March 2006 available under one roof again  :)

You will notice a 'broken link' button is now available in most posts, and I am hoping members will use this to report any broken links they do find.

Thanks for bearing with us for the last couple of days.

Funny goings on with electric in Swindon, it blipped here too at the same time, just as I was logging off the Pc, so that
was confusing, then another about an hour later just as we were starting our meeting, someone said that all of Gorsehill lights were out.

Geoff the reply pane is still out of whack.  Writing goes on and on over to the right.
Oi! Listen mush. Old eyes, remember? I’ve been around the block a few times. More than a few. They’ve knocked down the blocks I’ve been around and rebuilt them as bigger blocks. Super blocks. And I’ve been round them as well.  The Doctor (Night Terrors)

  • `13 years of lies lies, sleaze porn 10p fiascos, m
for the second time in a week, we lost power last night at about 6.25, rang up and they told us it was a board fault at one of the local power points and would take an hour to fix, so I got my small gene out and ran up a few lights in the house, the man three doors away had a moan about the gene noise, so I asked him why he was in the dark !!, at 7.30 I rang back again and the line was 'not available', it came back on at about 8.10. I m told that if you have repeated outages like this, you can claim, but dont know that for sure. or what you can claim, could I claim for my gene petrol for example?

take care, KK..

Sounds like a problem with the way your browser is rendering the page. Out of interest, what browser and version are you using? There should be a "About..." option in the Help menu which will tell you this.

Browser is the most likely cause of this - also try pressing ctrl+f5 at the same time to clear your cache.

I get these symptoms on Chrome but not on Firefox. Something's changed somewhere and can't seem to overcome it with the Chrome settings (of which there are legion).

I'm not using either of those Weebs, just plain old Google (as far as I know) but just doing that
ctrl+f5 has worked for me.

Firstly, and I want to be very clear about this, I am not a user of Google Chrome and don't claim to be familiar with it because I will not allow it to be installed on my workstation.

Chrome's support page is here: http://support.google.com/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=95582  it includes instructions on clearing chromes cache.

Clearing the google chrome cache might help. I can't definitively say that it will help, but it might.  You could also try upgrading your Chrome to the latest version. :)

There's also shouting and pressing the keys really hard.

I still can't do pound signs. When I press 'pound' I get #.

I can do $ though.

Can't find the Euro key, which must irritate Belgium.
Sometimes I think you have to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don’t know what your rights are, or who the person is you’re talking to. Then, on the way out, slam the door.

Sounds like you're on US keyboard layout. I expect the @ and " symbols have swapped places too?

In Windows 7 you can change the keyboard layout to UK via the control panel -> clock, language and region -> change keyboards or other input methods -> keyboards and languages tab -> change keyboards button.

Can't remember off the top of my head where it is in XP, but it's somewhere in the control panel, look for things called keyboard settings, international settings, localization settings, something like that.

Much funnier to convince him he's using the French or Bulgarian layout.....
