Tapatalk App Now Active
« on: November 20, 2012, 01:01:52 AM »
After todays upgrade was finished I enjoyed a little 'me' time and installed the forum plugin to support the Tapatalk app..... which I'm using to post this.

I quite like it.... more later :-)

The blurb....

Quote
What is Tapatalk?

Tapatalk is an app on iPhone, Android and Blackberry which enables easy and native browsing of a forum with the plugin installed. Over 30,000 forums have installed this MOD - and now TS has it.

OK, What can it do?

Tapatalk enables easy browsing of a forum by giving a easy and structured layout of forums. Not only you can read the forums and topics, but also reply to them and create new ones. Apart from the standard topics/posts, it has support for PM viewing and replying. You can also view your subscribed topics, latest posts of the forum, who's online, others profiles.

All that in a seamless integrated user interface with the phone. Also it allows you upload photos straight from the app to SMF forum as an attachment!

How much does it cost?
Currently the Blackberry, iPhone and Android costs $2.99. The plugins for forums are free of charge.

Where can I get it?

iPhone version (not sure, wherever you get iphone & ipad apps??)

Android versions can be obtained at Android market.

BlackBerry APP World download: http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/46654?lang=en

I've only spent 30 minutes playing with it but I like what I see and feel so far.  It's certainly much, much nicer than farting around with TS via a web page on my phone, and my phone is a big screen Galaxy Note! (Gawd only knows how I managed with my Blackberry for all those years)

Anyway, the forum plugin seems to function as it should and for a couple of quid to get the app on my Android it was well worth a punt.  Early days but I think it's a good'un :)

*I'll put a genuine screenshot of TS in the quote later today :)

Some screenshots of the Tapatalk App in action on my Android phone - all thumbs can be enlarged by clicking:

I'm liking this app more each minute :)

BTW: It took less than 2 minutes to locate it at the Play Store, (formerly the Android Market), download it, install it and begin using it.

I'm utterly delighted as well.

Still just water coming from mine though I'm sure I'll be receiving emails via the plumbing any time now.

Stunning innovation, my toaster still fecks up me DVD's though.

I've been using Tapatalk on my Galaxy for a couple of weeks and think integrating Tapatalk functionality into TS was worth doing, and the £1.99 it cost to buy the App itself was money well spent.

Since I've had Tapatalk on my phone I haven't accessed Talkswindon using a web browser on my phone at all - just the App. I haven't checked yet but assume I'm using far less of my monthly data transfer allowance than usual, but will report on this at the end of my billing period.

I don't have any real niggles with this app apart from it doesn't auto-refresh 'read topics' immediately after you have read them.  I tend to tell it to refresh after each read although I could just as easily wait for it to auto-refresh when I next open the app. (which it does each time the app is started)

You can also set the app to log in automatically to check for new personal messages - this is useful but I've noticed I now appear to be online when I'm actually in bed which can be a bit of a pain when peeps in my network phone much earlier than usual 'cos they think I'm awake :)

So far then: A good, useful app which does what it says on the box with minimum fuss.

Would I recommend TS members pay £1.99 for it? - Yes - if you're frequently away from your pc but want to keep abreast of new and ongoing TS topics, then this is a worthwhile purchase, (provided you have an Android, Blackberry or Apple Phone, iPad or tablet).  It is possible to dip in and out of TS in a matter of seconds to check for new thread titles and posts, and because the site navigation is very fast, a lot of forums can be grazed through in a short period of time.

The app works on any internet forum which has been made Tapatalk friendly, and you can add as many forum addresses as you like to the log in page of your Tapatalk app.

No. I or TS don't receive any payment from Tapatalk or Android market for recommending the app :)

Monetization for Forum Owners – Tapatalk to begin testing ad formats

Dear Forum Owners,

We are excited to announce that Tapatalk is going to begin testing a free version of Tapatalk and in-app ads as a way to help you make money from mobile traffic.

Moving from a paid app to a free app

We recently started to offer the Tapatalk app for free for iOS devices. Since we began to test the free version, we are very happy to report a significant increase in downloads.

Testing ad formats

In the next few days, we will begin to test ad formats on Tapatalk. The ad formats will be integrated within topics, and there will be three formats; banner ads, app installs, and “Promoted Topics” (similar to Facebook’s Promoted Stories).

During this initial phase, we will be testing technical integrations. The frequency of ads will be very low, and many of your users may never see an ad.

You can view screen shots of the ad formats here

After the test

We expect the test phase to run 30-90 days. At the end of test, we will have a good understanding of the performance of the various ad formats. We will also determine the revenue model, and we will retroactively share the ad revenue from the test period with you.

We are excited about helping you earn money from users accessing your forum through Tapatalk. Over the next few weeks, we will provide you updates on the test and will monitor and respond to feedback on the Tapatalk Engagement and Monetization support forum.

If you prefer that your Forum not participate in the pilot, please email me at eric@tapatalk.com

The Talkswindon Forum

From: Geoff Reid         Subject: Monetisation pilot

Dear Eric

Please do not include http://www.talkswindon.org in your monetisation pilot.

I hope that future plans for tapatalk & forum monetisation will be on a voluntary ‘opt-in’ basis?, should monetisation ever become automatic/mandatory I wouldn’t hesitate to remove tapatalk functionality from the Talkswindon forum and would cease recommending, what is at present, a thoroughly brilliant app.

Much of tapatalks strength and attractiveness is that it doesn’t inflict the annoyance of commercial advertising on the user.

Personally speaking I’m saddened by this development.

Regards

Geoff Reid

After upgrading the (forum) plugin for TS yesterday I found I couldn't access TS via Tapatalk at all.  (This may have been specific to my phone because I was also messing about with that).

On my phone I kept receiving a 'connecting to server' message...but it never managed to connect.

The fix? - delete the App and re-install - all working normally now  :santa_afro:

I also noticed that the Tapatalk app is now completely free, so if you haven't already got it on your smart phone now's the time to install it and try it out  :santa_smiley:

Whenever I use my phone to log in to TS lately my browser completes the search for me from my search history.

All perfectly normal.

Trouble is, if I click on the link provided, I end up with a blank Tapatalk page with no functions to get to TS.

This could be a tech issue that's preventing many of the previous users from logging in.

Does anyone regulate this site anymore?
