Well you're all entitled to your opinion. But on a technical point I would like to point out that the rent is not £170 a week. The rent for that flat is £425 a month. The £170 a week (£680 a month) figure is what the council charges the housing benefit.

You see, the council, acting as a social letting agent. Lets the property from a local letting agent at the market rate. They then bump the price up, giving the letting agent his rent, and keeping the £255 mark up for themselves. Which brings me onto the original point I wanted to make before everybody started focusing on the fact I'm unemployed. Which is the fact that the council are using this system to syphon money out of the Housing Benefit budget.

I wonder how the other 13,000+ people on Swindon's housing waiting list feel about this chap being handed weighted dice, throwing a six, passing 'GO', collecting £170 and a home.... while they're not even close to being invited to play......

I don't know much about housing benefits, but what's to stop those 13k people on the "waiting list" from renting privately and paying their rent with their benefits in the same way this chap is?

Because the government put a stop to this. That's why I was initially made homeless. The only reason I got this flat is because the council found a way to circumvent the legislation, and in the process, funnel money out of the Benefit Budget. Put simply it means this option is only open to you IF you go through the council.

It's laughable mate. Seriously.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought from the story above that you had to move out due to the newly introduced housing benefits limits?

what is needed now is for every homeless person to camp out on the civic gardens and then perhaps some sense of truth will come out and those who work and do what they can for themselves will prevail  and those who think the world owes them a living will get their just rewards.......;

You're exactly right, mate. I was told I had to move out because the change in government policy meant that the council were no longer willing to pay £450 a month for me to stay in my privately rented flat. However, using this scheme the council let the property from a local letting agent, paying him the £425 a month rent for the flat. And they then rent it to me, charging £680 a month.

What this means is they can then charge the Housing Benefit £680, funnelling £255 out of the total cost for themselves. A very clever was of no only circumventing the legislation, but also enabling them to make a very tidy profit for themselves. Which no doubt also helps them justify their budget.

Danny - if what you are saying is true, its a real story of public importance. What a shame you did your protest in such a way that it appeared to be all about you wanting the flat of your choice (at tax payers expense.)

 :(
I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it - [attributed to] Voltaire... 'Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessita' - William of Occam.... 'You have a right to feel offended, but just cos you are offended doesn't mean you are right'

I'd put it a slightly different way... the story was reported in a way that implied that's all Danny wanted.  I've no idea how Danny originally conceived his protest (and the way things start out and get reported in the media are not guaranteed to be the same).

Moley - I worked in PR for over ten years, so you don't have to teach granny to suck eggs on this one.

Similarly, it appears Mr Lake has been involved in protest and extreme right wing politics for a long time, so he should be well aware of how the media works and how to make sure you get your point across.

Setting out your case is very easy as long as you are clear - and any journo (even an adver one!) would have been all over an issue as controversial as councils profiteering from benefit payments it had been presented.

That Danny didn't present the story in this way seems to clearly illustrate that the issue was less important to him than getting the type of flat he wanted. Nowhere in any of his comments has he complained about being misrepresented by the Adver, has he?

He's even had the opportunity to make the point in a follow-up article in the Adver ... and has failed to do so.

Being in PR and dealing with the press every now and then, is a different kettle of fish, many times we've started out with stories but the press has always dragged their agenda into it and it's very difficult, unless you have a press machine behind you to get them to print or at least not edit out what is the point you want to get across in the first place.

To be honest, I don't think it should be that hard, but it is. Sometimes the reporter that covers the story, doesn't have a clue what you are on about and so can't possibly write it well enough to get your message across.

Even tried press releases.

I must admit to finding this all a bit odd.

I do a bit of volunteering on benefits advice.. and have also attended a course on Universal Credit which included the new housing benefits advice.

The numbers don't make sense to me...
It takes wisdom to know what you know and wisdom to know what you don't know and when to call in those who do. Often the people who do know will advise that evidence and research are very helpful when making decisions. Who knows it might even save a bit of money.

I am not sure that under the current HB process that SBC could do what Mr Lake is suggesting and 'pocket the difference'.

If I recall correctly, under the new HB rules, any single person under 34 would not be entitled to HB for anything other than a room in accommodation with shared facilities ( Kitchen and bathroom.. I believe)

Well that's just it. I did make the point. Time and again. I've even sent in letters to the adver in an attempt to get these issues bought to the attention of the wider public. But the adver simply isn't interested in anything other than sensationalist story telling...Although my cousins comments may have something to do with that lol

2nd attempt, I have tackled both Mr Tomlinson and Mr Bluh about this fraud, Justin said it was expected from Talk Swindon as its full of labour Members and activists, and was not true, I am awaiting a reply from Mr Bluh, who is on holiday, so perhaps Mr Lake can commet further on this matter of fraud, and give us some more facts that we can substanbtiate the story back to them for proof....

I actually feel sorry for JT!!

In what world does he live?

Or is it more a case of anyone who disagrees with him has to be a Labour Activist or a member of TS?

Rather sad really, or is it more a case of wanting a quiet life in Westminster without those awful people called constituents who have the temerity to ask awkward questions?

Kareen is right. Anybody under 35 only gets the shared accommodation rate, which in the case of Swindon appears to be £70 a week.
