Is it me or is this chap taking the p**s?
« on: August 08, 2012, 03:29:44 PM »
A chap by the name of Danny Lake is spongeing off us for the tune of £170 per week to rent a Studio Flat, because he refuses to live in shared accomodation.

http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/9860444.Homeless_man_takes_a_stand_over_housing_benefits_cuts/?action=success

Interesting it seems that he is reporting that government cuts to housing benefits caused him to become "Homeless" yet the sponger has been posting on his own blog for sometime, and has been planning to be homeless for sometime, and visited some cultural places in that time.

Typical of the Adver to try, without research to make a story - when all the Guy is is a freeloading lowlife.

I wonder if he got off his backside to visit the job centre whilst camping outside the civic ?
It wasn't as though he had to travel far now was it!
He is obviously literate enough to complete job application forms.
He has computer skills as well.

Hmmmm

Well, this publicity will have ensure that the DSS and SBC will be all over his housing application and Job Seekers claims like a rash, given that he's taken out time to go protesting and travelling - I hope for his sake, he wasn't claiming to be available for work whilst he was pursuing his private crusade at tax-payers expense...

The trouble with numpties like this guy is that their example givse carte blanche for the nastiest elements of the right to cut back on benefits for those that really need them...

 :agreed:

I haven't looked into this particular case in detail, but yes, there are those who seek out individuals who extract the metaphorical urine from the welfare system and then hold them up to the rest of the world as examples of why everyone who is in receipt of benefits is some kind of scrounger.

And there are those who have genuinely fallen on hard times (e.g. their job description has become redundant because their employer isn't getting the level of business that they used to, what with all the austerity going on, and they can't find another job for more or less the same reason).

I don't like the Big Society any more. Public sector workers made redundant in the hope that they'll join the voluntary sector and do their former jobs for free. Huge cuts to public spending in the vain hope that the private sector will step in and employ all the people who find themselves out of a job as a result. Caps on benefits in the hope that those who can no longer afford to live as a result will get one of those jobs which the private sector will supposedly create.

2 years ago I was overjoyed to see that the NuLabour government of Blair and Brown, with its seeming obsession with knowing everything about us and telling us what we may or may not do,  had been removed from power. I thought that replacing it with a coalition of an opposing party who I'd never vote for in a million years and a party that I have some common ground with, would be an improvement.

How wrong I was  :bash: :'(
We are all in this together, but some of us are more in it than others (with apologies to George Orwell)

If he did not have a case or any legal right then the council would not have sorted him out with a place to live would it. He must be entitled to all this help and if your not happy with it then why not write to the leader of the council or an  MP ask him why this man has now got a place to live.

Maybe they didnt like the thought of him camping outside the Civic !
I wonder if they looked into who he was and was worried that they could end up with more campers and protesters in the Civic carpark .............. who knows !

He's not the only sponger - his Landlord is not far behind if he thinks £170 a week is fair rent for that flat!!

Quote
Danny Lake, 27, started living in a tent in the garden of the Civic Offices, in Euclid Street, on Monday evening to highlight the effects of Government changes to housing benefit for single people aged 25 to 34 in private rented accommodation, which he said had forced him out of his Purton flat.

After discussions with council officers on Tuesday, he said they offered to provide 100 per cent housing benefit to cover the £170 weekly rent on a private one-bedroom studio flat in Grange Park, under a scheme which he said was not mentioned to him previously.

Perhaps I'm being dumb, but isn't Purton in Wiltshire's local authority area?  If it is, why didn't Mr Lake approach Wiltshire Council or SBC point him towards Wiltshire Council?

I wonder how the other 13,000+ people on Swindon's housing waiting list feel about this chap being handed weighted dice, throwing a six, passing 'GO', collecting £170 and a home.... while they're not even close to being invited to play......

'Rodopoly'.  It's the game not everyone is invited to play

Two things strike me -

1. £170 per week for a studio flat is ridiculous - that's £736 per calendar month which would get you a penthouse apartment in Swindon. Studio apartments are available across the town from £400 inclusive of bills which reflects and brings me to point two

2. The LHA rate for a single person is £99.23 per week - it doesn't matter what you rent or where in this area, as a single person you are entitled to that amount and no more. Any extra you have contracted for in rent is for you to find and you cannot look to the council for it.

So, if the article is right then SBC have made an extraordinary settlement with this man and since the delegated authority for Housing Benefits is Capita who are bound by legislation (and their profit interests) to dispense benefits to formula,  this is a matter that deserves enquiry.
