Hercules
« on: August 02, 2012, 10:13:57 AM »
Have just read a message on twitter from James Gray MP, about the hercules at brize norton or not at brize as the case may be.. an official has now admitted that of the 32 fleet, 3 are at Brize, 6 are on overseas ops, and 17 are 'stored' elsewhere, with the firm Marshalls of Cambridge having the most it seems, and the engineers are being paid hotel bills of £180 a night to go and service them wherever they are.. Gray said for years that brize would be big enough for all they wanted to put in there so he has been proved right it seems, what a disgrace and lyneham is sitting empty....

And the good people of Brize and Carterton are complaining loudly about the noise generated by the Hercs taking off and landing !

VC10 s and various tanker aircraft don't appear to make quite as much noise......hmmmm  odd that !
Old people believe everything...middle aged people suspect everything...young people know everything    3 2 1 back in the room !

The last Labour Governments plan to close Lyneham was a bad one. The haste with which the current Conservative/Lib Dem Government implemented the closure was as shortsighted as it was illogical.

With so few Hercules operating from Brize Norton it's surprising that Carterton's residents notice them at all. As Boothill points out, Brize's geriatric fleet of VC10's are far, far noisier than the chordant humming of four C130 turboprops.

Judge for yourself:

C130 Hercules (Lockheed Turbo prop engines)

RAF VC10  (Conway jet engines)

I know which aircraft I'd prefer to have as a close neighbour and, (I bet I'm not alone in this), would love to see the Hercs back at Lyneham and flying past my bedroom window.  I miss them.

Does anyone know when Lyneham is supposed to become the promised training base? It's looking rather forelorn when I go through, lots of houses up for sale.

And did anyone spot the military helicopters the other day?

By 2015, I should imagine there's a fair bit of clearing-up and building work that needs to be done.

I've just found a rather helpful FAQ: http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/rwbandck-lynehamfaq-jan12.doc.pdf
