Honda's Turbine Dreams to Become Reality Tonight?
« on: July 12, 2011, 06:42:39 PM »

The Planning Committee meeting this evening is due to decide whether Honda can go ahead with their turbine plan for the plant. What does everyone think?

Just heard it's been deferred, over 300 people turned up and they couldn't get them all in, so looking for a bigger place to hold the meeting.

Come to think of it, could they manage a meeting of that many people anyway?

I feel a rejection of the planning application is imminent!

I can't see a problem with them apart from being able to see them! But then, I love the turbines at Watchfield and could sit and watch them all day.

Will 300 people making objections to the Turbine mean that the meeting will last for several hours?

Would you be happy for, say 12 to be sited on the Coate site?

Can't speak for Jean but I'd be very happy as no one would want to buy a house there so that'd wave bye bye to any plans for housing.

Would I like one overlooking my back garden? I'd love one, I could quite happily sit in a garden chair and watch them all day.  Noise, once you zone in the 'noise' you get from them is very relaxing I find.

Are the 300 people from South Marston? Seems unlikely.

I'm guessing they are from "Ill Wind", who seem to make dubious claims about strobe effects and wind blocking.
I have actively taken part in the Coate campaign and would not object to them being sited there.
I live in the town centre and would be happy to see one in Faringdon Rd Park.

So we don't want wind turbines and we don't want an incinerator. How do we want Swindon's power produced? Coal-fired power station? Nuclear?

That would be my feeling, but people seem to hate most forms of energy production being located near where they live.

Swindon doesn't have a power station or a particularly sustainable local water supply. (We're one of the most water-stressed towns in the UK). There's always talk of business growth, but without good water and power capacity, our growth as a town should be limited - unsustainable growth is a stupid and short-term idea.

Dead right Drone, my thoughts exactly - Swindon's not sustainable. Come the holocaust, we'll be done for. (Although I know of a spring and some hedgerows with berries)

I am sure some compromise could been reached on the Honda site, and let's face it that's not the prettiest thing to live close by anyway. I wonder if free or greatly reduced electricity bills would help?

If there was a way we could achieve sustainable and free electricity for Penhill,  I'd be listening. We've got enough mobile phone masts, so I can't see they would add any more of an health  hazard.

Up until its demolition in the 1970's Swindon used to have its own power station in Moredon (near Akers Way at the side of the old railway line).

Power generation is one of the worst sectors when it comes to NIMBYism, everyone wants and demands (cheap) power yet they don't want it produced on their doorstep.  I remember the Watchfield debate and the tales of woe in the adver from people living nearby, can't remember if anyone screamed in a hysterical voice "won't somebody think about the house prices" (before falling down backwards in a swoon) but I bet some wanted to.

Did anyone hear Greenhalgh on the radio this morning? I have never been a fan of his but what a treat it was to hear a councillor tell it as it is instead of sucking up to the protesters. He did not agree with their protests and told them so. I believe the next meeting will be held at the Wyvern as it was for the Front Garden application.

Since when has Greenhaugh 'sucked up to protestors'  he always says it like HE feels it, of course that works to his advantage when you agree with him.

Will it affect the Tory vote in that area?

No it matters not what the Tories do to people they still come out and vote for them. Some still think Mike Bawden was not a Tory leader of a Tory council but the Tory leader of a Labour council during the early 2000s when the Labour government took the education off a Tory administered council.

http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/archive/2004/02/16/Wiltshire+Archive/7287182.The_leader_was_ready_to_resign/

Quote
The Conservative leader of Swindon Council has revealed exclusively to the Evening Advertiser that he feared the final budget meeting would be his "Waterloo".

Which Contradicts this leaflet

On 16th/02/04 Mike Bawden was Leader in the year 2003/04 According to the leaflet it was Labour but it was the Tories who had no stars that year? How did that happen? A Tory Typo?

Every dog is allowed one bite so I suppose Tories are allowed 1 Typo oh but wait  here is another one http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/1952610.stm on 26th April 2002 Mike Bawden was Swindon Council Tory leader.
so in the year 2001/2002 No Stars for the Tories again its shows Labour Typo 2

If Mike Bawden was leader and the council had no stars in those years the fact is council tax was increased under a Tory council is that TYpo no 3?

It is possible Kohima will post spitting feathers so can he FOI the council if he does not agree with the BBC and Adver but he may just accept the Leaflet is a true account of those years and the adver and BBC have got it wrong?

If only electricity could be generated from NIMBYs sense of smugness, Swindon would be the power house of the World.

I'd prefer to live next to a wind turbine than a coal fired power station.

Do they mitigate the effects of Flicker using a giant sun blind like on cricket pitches sort of wheel it out and around the square?

I would prefer to live next to a water mill than a wind powered turbine.
