one other thing that can have a big impact on your apparent broadband speed (especially on some of the speed tests) is your virus checker... some of the more modern ones expect a multi-core super computer to run them on and will really impact download speeds on an older PC or a netbook...

Norton is by far the worst.. I have an older PC that the kids use - I discovered that it was using around 70% of its CPU just keeping the virus checker up to date (the particular version of Norton was doing updates every 15 minutes and couldn't be disabled).

Expensive Norton gone and replaced with Avast which is free, and much less intrusive.

Yep, Avast here too.

Norton, Macbastard and the others aren't allowed anywhere near my equipment.

I currently have the virgin extra large package 50 meg broad band, I have heard they are bringing out the 100 meg soon.

I am also thinking of upgrading my laptop and going for one with a solid state HD, which should hopefully make a  difference to it's performance ;)

My interweb comes from under the telly.

There is a black box that has 2 blue lights and 2 green lights. One of each colour goes winky winky in an enchanting way. Sometimes I watch them when the Eternal Radiance has arranged our viewing pleasure.

My black box of the Interweb says ScanmySpeed is a bad place.

I'm running at 8.9 download and 2.4 upload this morning. Does this mean my winky box will overflow and will I have to fit a bit of 15mm tubing to get rid of the surplus wossnames?

It's getting quicker!

If it spills will it stain?

I dream of anything above 5 thingies per second. (I used to dream of other things but age weakens the resolve.)

As you can see, my isp isn't Digital City (UK) Ltd and didn't cost Swindon taxpayers £400,000...

....but it is moderately nippy....

BT phoned me and the guy enquired, (in a voice like Buzz Lightyear), "May I take you to Infinity and beyond, sir?' to which I responded "You may indeed".

3 days later a nice young man from BT arrived, changed our main incoming socket wossname for an optical one and were were duly 'infinitised, and have had those speeds ever since.  The increase in upload speed has been hugely useful but our BT Vision service (TV) is now excellent.

So as it is optical I take it that you are on a fibre optic network. Do BT own the fibre optic network do you know or do the likes of BT , Virgin share or what? Not that it'll ever affect me. We use a couple of wires from a barbed-wire fence for our phone connection!

Yep, BT installed their own optical network in West Swindon. Not sure if customera of other isp's, (virhin etc), can access the BT infinity network in the same way they currently use BT copper cable phone wires to get their (8 meg?) service in areas where their own isp has not yet cabled.
