Who have you met......
« on: April 13, 2010, 06:46:57 PM »
As the general election campaign gets into full swing, I was wondering whether any TS members have had the opportunity to meet some of the 'big name' politicians that have visited the area.

My starter for 10 is Andy Burnham the Health Secretary.  He was in town today and I managed to have a lengthy* discussion with him about the country drifting towards a police state.  I cited stop and search, the NIR, detention without trial, the extension to detention with trial as examples.  I was kicking myself afterwards though as forgot to mention the whole 'you can't take photos in public' issue and a whole host of other sinister laws that have been passed in recent years.

Bursnham had no answers at all, but Anne Snelgrove was very pleasant and tried to move the conversation onto WIFI...I suppose looking for common ground makes some sense when you're on the election trail.

Has anyone else met any 'big names' it would be interesting to hear about your encounters.

*By lengthy I mean that I held him up for long enough for his henchwoman to tell me that they really had to move along to meet other people.

You should have asked that lobby fodder Snelgrove about any future PO closures and would she vote for the voters or for the party?........

The count of politicians and canvassers seeking my opinion or my vote during this general election campaign currently stands at zero. The last canvasser to catch me at home called about 9 years ago, and was looking for the previous resident but one of my house. Have I been blacklisted following my somewhat challenging communications with my current MP Anne Snelgrove?

Having said that, I've recently spoken to one of the people who wants to be my next MP, and I think she's worthy of my vote.

The person in question is Jenni Miles. (She's already a contributor to TS and I hope she'll be contributing lots more here as the election campaign hots up).

Jenni is the Green party PPC for South Swindon, but that's not how I know her. I think I first met her when Greenpeace were trying to re-establish a presence in Swindon some 5 or 6 years ago, and she helped out with a street stall. Sadly the Greenpeace meme failed to catch on in Swindon (again), but Jenni didn't give up, and she was there when Swindon Climate Action Network was formed, and has been involved ever since (give or take any conflicts of interest between representing a political party and working for a non-partisan environmental group). She has also taken up other posts in the community in that time, which are too numerous for me to list.

Since Jenni decided to stand for political office, I've been very impressed with her. She exhibits the joined-up thinking about environmental issues which are sadly missing from the the other parties' statements. (For example, Anne Snelgrove was a champion of the climate change act, yet she's still in favour of expanding Heathrow airport)

I think I know where my vote's going. Any other parties want to influence me?  :D

Greenpeace failed to get off the ground in Swindon. I used to have a 2CV Citreon Ami with a save the whale sticker and a nuclear power geen bedankt, sticker on which I think was dutch? Nearly forgot a CND badge. Being in the Police and living near Burghfield common ROF/Awre/Greenham I got stopped a few times off duty, but could never think why?  ::)

Who is now the Environmental Rep on the Swindon Strategic Partnership?.  Who elect's them to that post, gives them a mandate and to whom do they report back?.   After that how do they get their information out?

Since the demise of the Swindon Environmental Forum we don't get together to decide action or re-action or comment on things.

I can tell you who is the Environmental Rep to the SSP Overview and monitoring group (plus)  - me!!   To whom do I report, I don't, I don't know the sector network, where it meets, who calls it together etc. etc.  seems like there is a select few doing their own thing somewhere.

Where were you when we were trying to recruit new active supporters?

That's a very valid question, and one which I think we ought to know the answer to. Unfortunately my brain tends to turn to mush very early on in the process of trying to engage with local authorities, extract useful information from them and provide pertinent feedback on their policies, so I'm not going to be much help in finding out.  :(

How much make-up was Andy Burnham wearing today?

I saw Justin in the queue for Dave Pearce at Liquid and Envy. Can't say fairer than that.

Ref Environmental Rep:  I sort of lost the will to participate when a professor (of Mechanical Engineering?? I think it was) from Bath Uni living and working in Bath, was made our Environmental rep to the SSP.  It seemed at the time that the 'electoral' group voting on that was almost completely from the Wildlife Trust and he had connection with them - no one else had heard of him.  There were obvious other choices from the Swindon activists, those that had been working living and breathing our Swindon environmental issues for donkey years, completely passed over.   The reasons for which I will leave to your imagination.    Apparently he was brought in to write some sort of Climate change plan, which was apparently eventually written by his students. (What happened to that I wonder?)  Anything we had to say was dismissed because of this guys (obvious) greater knowledge.

One thing I never got around to doing was finding out any connection to Nuclear Power use.
