I'm told Cllr Maurice Fanning has been de-selected by Labour and will not be campaigning in the Swindon 2010 local elections, or if he does it will not be waving the red flag.

Monty is briefing anyone who will listen with a 'Maurice is standing down because of x, y and z' message, but I understand Maurice's past performance isn't sufficient to keep him on Monty's dream team.

So, the question is: Is labour going to inflict an all-woman shortlist on Gorsehill, (as they intend to do in Penhill by fielding Cllr Bakers wife against Cllr Glaholms seat), or is Mark wossisname going to have a stab at Gorsehill after being rejected by voters in Parks last time ?

Watch this space.....

They have selected Ian Carroll.

He is a Parish Councillor on the Haydon Wick Parish Council.

He has previously stood for Labour in the Abbey Meads & Haydon Wick wards, both with big defeats despite a big push.

I would imagine he has been selected as he has shown in the Abbey Meads & Haydon Wick elections he is prepared to put in the effort.

'His' campaigns were very nasty (which then led to the big defeats (our record wins in both wards)) though I suspect he didn't write his leaflets.

I have met him a couple of times and he seemed nice enough.

Thanks, that clears that up then.

I wonder why Monty is being so tight lipped ?

Why is Monty being so tight lipped?
His script writer, the labour groups political assistant is on holiday.

Trouble is, if you were to put a dead parrot, with a big red rosette, they would vote it in, as they say, cant see the wood for the trees. :coffee:

The epitomy of what Swindon calls 'not interested'

Once I made the mistake of asking him a serious question and he looked at me as though I was a dog turd on his shoe and just walked away.

Good Riddence, we need people of substance and committment and sadly that rules more than a few Swindon Borough Councillors out.

I know Maurice - well, knew him, I suppose you could say he's a spent force, though force he was at one time, with green issues, he was either helping or stood in the way, either way we had to deal with him to get past him.

Ian I don't know at all and too busy to swat up. So tell me more?

Muggins

You are right, he and Nick Martin have always worked closely on the Community Forest.

And in the days before Nick Martin he was with the Community Forest and the sadly lamented and badly missed Environmental Forum. Although we had many an heated indirect disagreement over things, he always had a kind word for Muggins face to face - mind you I suppose he could have been patronising, but I think not.

Course in those days the Community Forest Team numbered about 10 -  he's gone - it's down to 2.  Is Nick Martin still involved?

Hmm not quite, Louise Gallavin our candidate last time came within 42 votes of winning it.

Yes JUstin, she did very well,  but taking into account that the people of Gorsehill now had a very much reduced council tax, the education was being sorted, to their advantage, things were starting to happen that never did in all the years of labour rule,  why did the people of gorsehill still reject her as they did, I can remember walking down argyle street, some years ago, when I was trying to get on the council, for the conservatives, and I was putting the leaflets through the doors of the one side of the street, and  literally, as I went down that side, those on the other side, were opening up their doors and ripping up the leaflets, and shouting labour abuse at me, and I wouldnt mind betting its the same in wards like the ones in Rodbourne. still things can only get bettter as they say, so lets hope for better things in the months ahead......

<pedant mode>I think it was 49 votes</pedant mode>

But Graham Cherry (Con) narrowly beat Mark Dempsey (Lab) by 43 votes in Parks.

I'll be putting a small wager on Graham 'The Plumber Of Parks' Cherry losing his wafer thin majority, and seat, this year.

Poor old Graham Cherry will lose his seat by a country mile, probably because he is Rod Bluh's boy.  Sadly he has made more of an impression for his controversial ways of conducting business than actually achieving anything for his constituents.  Soon to be forgoten without trace!!

Haha yes, didn't take Cll'r Cherry long to get a complaint submitted to the Standards Board about him.

I wonder whether Annies 'Parks Action Team' will become a 'Get Graham!' campaign?

Don't agree.
Graham Cheery is hugely popular. Most voters have no idea of Euclid street goings on, they just know that Graham is local and is known as a good bloke. He wond this seat - he'll win it again.

Tenner to the charity of your choice ( as long as it's SMASH) if he loses.

( this is the point at which you pledge a tenner to the charity of my choice if he wins )

Actually Graham Cherry is hugely popular, but only with the prospective labour candidate because Cll'r Cherry is making their work easy  :)

You're on with a £10 wager - but I choose REDOUBT. (I prefer to pick my own charideee  :) )

Therefore, If I win you pay £10 to REDOUBT

If I lose, I pay £10 to SMASH

I bet I win....

Maybe ZPW knows something we don't Geoff but he is only a success in the figment of his own imagination and listens too much to his fishing mates.
As regards Euclid Street has he worked out what happens there yet?

Ian Carroll has disappeared off the radar (de-selected !) in favour of another candidate - a lady I believe  :azn:
