What the HELL is going on in Swindon's courts?

Despite the problems this country faces from knife crime, apparently it's perfectly OK to carry a knife to nightclubs as long as you pretend it's 'only' for use in cutting your Crack stash:

Woman tried to take kitchen knife into bar
6:53pm Sunday 12th October 2008

By Emma Streatfield »

A WOMAN found in possession of a four-inch blade outside a popular town bar claimed she needed it for her crack habit.

Swindon magistrates heard how on July 27 Kirsty Smith was discovered with the kitchen knife when she tried to enter the Casbah in John Street.

Smith, 22, of Upfield, Liden, pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article.

Amanda Sawetz, prosecuting, said: “She said the knife was only being used to cut crack.

“She said ‘I had no intention of hurting anybody’.

“She said there was no reason to have the knife on her, the only reason was for crack.”

The probation service expressed concern about how Smith would get her methadone supply if she was doing community service,

It actually reads like a Viz parody.

Of course a person found carrying a knife in public isn't going to say, 'Yeah, I had it in order to stab somebody'.

If this woman didn't have Crack on her, why would she need the knife to cut it? Also how can a supposedly educted lawyer say the words, 'there was no reason to have the knife on her, the only reason was for crack'. There is no reason apart from the reason?

Despite the fact this should clearly have been a custodial sentence, we then have the probation service expressing concern that any community service given might mean the woman couldn't get hold of her free methadone. Come now, I'm sure they run a 24-hour door to door service for such things, after all, it's only taxpayers money.

I cannot be the only one getting thoroughly sick and tired of Swindon magistrates and judges letting just about everybody off with pointless ASBOs and 'Community Service'?

And if I see the name Judge Douglas Field along side any of these let offs again I think I might just have to take a knife round to his house... 'only' to cut up my Crack, natch.

It is bizarre, the clash of public pronouncements of 'toughness' - versus the meaningless of the punishments meeted out. You've certainly posted this in the right thread - what a sick comedy.

The story also reveals that this woman is recieving methadone as well - (presumably) for treatement for an existing heroin problem?
I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it - [attributed to] Voltaire... 'Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessita' - William of Occam.... 'You have a right to feel offended, but just cos you are offended doesn't mean you are right'

Its like the case of a trading standards officer took a young man to a shop in manchester road, and got him to attempt to buy a knife from the shop, the shopkeeper said HE looked over 16, so I sold him the knife, for his troubles in court he was fined nearly £4000 in fines and costs etc, then you read of a store, who has a branch in Swindon, selling a jacket with a knife which had a 2 and half inch blade sown into the lining, and also days later they were also caught selling a 'cane' with a 20 inch mini sword insde, the first instance brought a response from the local police, who said we will give them the appropriate advice on these matters, no prosecution on either case, so its one world for the shopkeeper and one for the big time store, and they they say crime will be a sorce of continued attack by the police etc, what a joke.....

I do my shopping here:

http://www.barrettrifles.com/rifle_82.aspx

There was some concern voiced by the neighbours but once I explained I used it to open cans of beans since we lost the tin opener I have had no trouble at all.

I also find it quicker and more convenient for drilling holes in wood and masonry, the large calibre makes it ideal for running pipework.

Carrying a concealed weapon to chop up your Class 'A' drug is eminently reasonable, it's hardly illegal is it? (Oh, really, silly me)

I urge you, again, to read Inspector Gadget at Wordpress for a policeman's eye view of working in a PC police force. The chap arrested for making homophobic comments about a horse is simultaneously amusing and teeth gnashingly frustrating.

Only the fundamentally innocent and honest need to be frightened in this country.
Sometimes I think you have to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don’t know what your rights are, or who the person is you’re talking to. Then, on the way out, slam the door.
