Free film - Our sufferings in this Land
« on: May 09, 2007, 09:57:37 PM »
Monday 14th May, 8pm
Back room of the Victoria, top of Victoria Road, Old Town
Free entry (there will probably be a collection)

Ed Hill, an independent film-maker from Bristol, will be visiting the Victoria Pub, Victoria Road, on Monday 14th May to present his documentary film showing the Palestinian olive harvest, and the difficulties the farmers face. The film is free, and starts at 8:00 pm, there will be opportunities to ask Ed questions afterwards.

The showing is being organised by Andy Newman, who along with three other Swindon peace campaigners, Bridget Lucas, John Wignall and Joanne Clothier visited the Palestinian town of Beit Fajjar, in the district of Bethlehem. Andy Newman explained: “Since our visit to Palestine we have been raising money for the people of Beit Fajjar, who endure terrible hardship due to the political and military situation. This film will help to raise awareness, and show practical ways that people can help”

In the autumn 2005, Ed Hill was part of a group of ordinary people from the UK visiting Palestine on a trip organised by Zaytoun, the ethical UK olive oil importers (www.zaytoun.org).

He was so shocked by the suffering he saw that he has taken time out from his job as a teacher to make a film of the experience. Entitled “Our sufferings in this Land” the film is in documentary format and last approx 75 minutes.

As well as visiting Jerusalem and Bethlehem the group stayed in two small rural towns in the West Bank working with the farmers harvesting their olives.

Since returning to the UK, Ed has set up a practical project to help Palestine, more details on www.BristolComputers4Palestine.co.uk which also contains library photos of Palestine, the film and Ed Hill.

Ed Hill says, “Israel has broken more UN resolutions than any other country in the world. Yet it has been the top recipient of American foreign aid for the last three decades. The British Government is happy to condone these policies and to engage in arms and other lucrative trade deals with Israel. The current building of Settlements and the Separation Wall in the West Bank are also in flagrant contravention of international law. Yet nothing is being done to stop them. Sadly the continued theft of their country, land, & resources, the grinding poverty, and the daily death toll inflicted on the civilian population seldom reaches our news. My eye-witness film shows how we were welcomed by the Palestinians, into their towns, their work, their homes, and into their lives. I encourage people to see this film - it could well change your life and your understanding of how the world works!”

Glad you enjoyed it.

These film nights happen on the second Monday of each month, and it looks like the titles for the next six months have been announced now:
