car parking railway station..
« on: October 19, 2016, 10:53:07 AM »
I have just been to the railway station to buy tickets for a trip on Friday, I found the pick up point, which opposite the great western hotel, was full of taxis and there were 4 taxis, parked on the other side of the road, all on double yellow lines, what is going on, where are the police where are the council officials, I had to park in station road and walk back.. :bash:

Yes, I know what you mean, the revamp of the station front was supposed to alleviate the taxi barricade, unfortunately it hasn't made much difference, as just like before, we have too many taxis outside the station.
Some years ago I asked a taxi driver how much it would cost to take us to West Swindon - he said he had no idea where West Swindon was, however I believe this was down to the fact he didn't want to lose his place in the queue for such a small fare when the next customer may want to travel to Marlborough.
Cycling to the station is still awkward if riding down Station Road, as it's not easy to get around the taxis, and the cycle rack at the front isn't big enough to cope with all the bikes, and the station staff putting their own padlocks on any bikes chained to the trees doesn't make much difference as the cyclists just cut through the cables.

If you are just picking up tickets you can park in the Short Stay for free. I think you get 15 minutes (possibly 30). You have to get a ticket from the parking meter and display it on the windscreen, but the ticket is free. I've never had a problem getting a space when picking up train tickets.

The taxis shouldn't be hogging the 'pick up point' but it isn't meant to be a short stay parking space whilst picking up tickets either. It's a picking up and dropping off point.

SM thanks for your reply, but what gets me is that since the revamp of the front of the station and the loss of the double parking bays, the taxi men now park at will around the area in what every place they can and nobody says a word about it..
