missing friends.......
« on: February 23, 2016, 09:36:23 AM »
Just a quickie, (as the actress said to the bishop), seems the postings on here have died a death, nothing of interest going on..
get your think caps out and ask the council, they said the money given (2 million) to the bus company it owns, was so given, to stop it going bust, just a few weeks later, they had a big announcement, that they had just bought 10 new buses, at a cost of 1.5 million, going bust eh, but don't worry, its only our tax payers money these clowns are playing with.. meanwhile child care centres are closed as they 'cant afford them'...... Has Coun Foley resigned yet?? :2funny:

Actually it's nice to see the council actually doing something with our bus services, however do we really need a fleet of new buses? What we really need is some of the old routes returned to us.
As for nothing happening on here well, it's the same old story, traffic jams due to roadworks, more houses being built for more people to live in the town, but not providing any new jobs or facilities for them.
On a brighter note at least we now have a decent coffee shop in town!
I see they are planning to bring back parking charges to Coate and Lydiard, so I guess it won't be long before once again we have lots of cars parked around Coate Water Roundabout.

Yes - Coffee #1 is a real + for the town.  I'm yet another person who is on here much less than before.... Recently started work in Slough so have much less time than before due to the drive to work :-(

Yeah this place has lost so much moment, just in past few days the Adver has carried plenty of stories that would have had us going years ago.

SBC / Centre for Cities report calling for more money/power from government http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/14335082.Taking_matters_into_our_own_hands/

Free school applications (half of which a religious schools) http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/14332311.Four_free_school_applications_in_Swindon_during_latest_bidding_round/

Bruce St roundabout FINALLY finished but causing problems http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/14326884.Drivers_speak_of_confusion_over_new_Bruce_Street_Bridges_road_layout/?ref=ar

I see you're missing me, well of it wasn't for this awful council (and government) closing everything and taking away any sort of support for the volunteers they want to do the jobs for them, I'd have a lot more time on my hands.

Never known a time like it!

Ps gross amounts of money are still being wasted, if what's happening up here is anything to go by, the little amounts must be adding up by now.  But we all need to be paying more and we all know it.

The only reason the taxes haven't gone up is to keep themselves in power, whoever inherits this wind, will reap a whirlwind.

Spot on M,

Having seen the waste at SBC I was/am supportive of efficiency savings, but they seem to have cut services without cutting any of the waste. Inexperienced officers taking twice as long to carry out simple tasks isn't efficient.

Would be happy to pay more tax for better services.

Also at a national level, cutting services/benefits in the name of austerity is one thing, but giving tax breaks to wealthy individuals in the same budget is unjust. If they don't start to fix it soon, it will be broken beyond repair.

What in gods name is the matter with the usual suspects. They are so frightened of mentioning Tax they can’t point out the changes in thresholds for those on basic rate gains them £100 while the changes in the top rate threshold benefits them by £400.

on another  tack  I see in the press and while out, akers way is about to close for some time, whitworth road is being made into some sort of chicane for motorists, greenbridge roundabout is about to be 'redeveloped',  bridge end road is also got notices up for closure, do we have anybody on road management in the council???

Akers Way will be a right pain in the backside, but it does badly need doing. 10 weeks sounds a very long time for a bit of surfacing, although I think residents have successfully convinced the council to provide some extra parking as well.

After the Bruce Street over runs, I wonder if SBC are exaggerating the time for completion to make it easy to hit the target. Allow 10 weeks for 4 weeks work and appear to be performing when you take 8 weeks.

What in gods name is the matter with the usual suspects. They are so frightened of mentioning Tax they can’t point out the changes in thresholds for those on basic rate gains them £100 while the changes in the top rate threshold benefits them by £400.

Are those the figures for the recent budget which comes into effect in April 2017? I think the April 2016 figures are a bit lower.

I would be prepared to pay a bit more tax, but would prefer to see a higher rate of basic tax (possibly with a higher personal allowance to protect the low paid). The sudden jump from 20% to 40% is quite harsh. Most of the people that I know who are in the higher rate band simply pay additional pension contributions (or take unpaid leave) to avoid paying it. With private pensions (as opposed to final salary) performing so badly, this is the sensible thing to do but doesn't help tax revenue.

25% basic rate tax (or 20% rising to 30% then 40%) and council tax rises in line with inflation would seem more reasonable. Arguing that it is necessary to cut benefits in order to reduce the deficit and then cutting tax seems counter-productive. Every budget will produce winners and losers, but it shouldn't always hit the poorest.

On the other hand, I am in favour of making work pay more than benefits in order to give an incentive to work. It is a difficult balance.

Back to those inexperienced officers and since Des is on this thread. the question has been posed to me, and I can't answer it.

Was there every a time when the council thought that Community Development department might be able to do the work of the Housing Dept?

I suspect the answer to that is  a big fat NO?

If so, why do they now think that Housing Dept. can do the work of Community Development Dept?

Because I can tell them they can't!

To other TS users, who might not be aware of the Community Development Department - well unless you were about 5/10 years ago, you wouldn't even have known there was one because it's all gone now.  The useful of that department?  They supported volunteers and communities to sort themselves out and apply good governance to what they did. The knock on of this was they could do much more for themselves, without getting into trouble (well that was the theory) didn't always work that way, but I had a fairly  good 20/25 years experience with them.
